There were five Central College athletics teams in action on Saturday. The #12 ranked Central football team had it’s 19-game regular season win streak snapped in 38-35 upset victory by Loras College on a last second field goal. A mostly even match went against the Dutch men’s soccer team in a 2-0 loss to Viterbo University (Wis.).

Central Opens Defense of ARC Football Title

The 12th-ranked Central College football teams hosts Loras today as the Dutch begin defense of last year’s conference championship. The Duhawks are 0-2 with losses to Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Benedictine, while Central is 2-0 with wins over St. Olaf and Eau Claire. In those two victories, however, the Dutch have run 135 plays to their opponents’ 175 – a difference of 20 per game. Coach Jeff McMartin says that they need to shrink that gap considerably, and it needs to happen on both sides of the ball.

Grinnell College Receives a Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching Grant from the Women’s Sports Foundation

Grinnell College received a Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching grant from the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF). Grinnell College is one of 10 universities and colleges to receive the grants, which are designated for women coaching fellows in a wide variety of women’s sports. Grants were awarded to institutions to support collegiate women coaches on the rise, assisting with living expenses, professional development and mentorship.

Monmouth College Bounces Back After Opening Week Loss with Blowout Win over Grinnell College

After a 34- loss to Wartburg College in the season opener, the Monmouth College Fighting Scots get a 48-0 road win over Grinnell College on rainy day in Grinnell, Iowa. It was the Midwest Conference opener for Monmouth and the season opener for Grinnell. The Scots got a big day out of wide receiver Nate Thornton and quarterback Carter Boyer. Boyer, who got the start in place of Riley Fetterer who had a prior family obligation, was 16-for-25 for 309 yards and four touchdown passes. He also ran 61 yards for a score on the first play of the 4th quarter. Thornton caught 7 passes for 205 yards. He was the recipient of three of the four touchdown passes by Boyer. The 205 yards by Thornton was the 6th most in a single game in Monmouth College history. Defensively, Monmouth held Grinnell to -25 rushing yards for the game. Korbyn Personett, who last season set a Scot’s single-season record holder for sacks with 16, garnered two sacks in the game.

Central College Sports Saturday Results

Central College had 10 athletics programs in action on Saturday. The Dutch women’s triathlon team was second at the Rhoads McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Central football outlasted the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the rain Saturday for a 31-13 win. The Dutch volleyball team went 1-1 at the St. Catherine Invitational, defeating the hosts in five sets before being swept 3-0 by the University of Wisconsin – Stout. Central’s women’s cross country team secured its second consecutive victory in the Les Duke Invitational field behind Caroline McMartin’s race winning effort, while the men’s cross country team came in second at the same event. A couple of second-half goals by Grinnell College handed Central men’s soccer a 2-0 loss on the road, and the Dutch women’s soccer team fell to St. Catherine University (Minn.) 4-1. The Central men’s golf team came in fifth-place finish at the 20-team Carthage (Wis.) Fall Classic, while the Dutch women’s golf team finished the first round of the Wartburg Fall Invitational in ninth place.

College football: UW-Eau Claire can't overcome 21-point deficit in loss to Central

The UW-Eau Claire football team fell behind by 21 points in the first half and couldn't recover in a 31-13 defeat to Central on Saturday in Pella, Iowa. Central's Brady Ketchum threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter to put the Dutch ahead 21-0. Eau Claire's Harry Roubidoux threw a touchdown to Tommy Tankhamvang and Ivan Ruble ran for a score to make it a 21-13 game in the fourth quarter, but the Blugolds didn't get any closer.
