One Person is Dead after a House Fire in Calais

One person has died in a Sunday evening house fire in Calais. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says it was approximately 9:30 Sunday night when the State Fire Marshal's Office responded to a house fire in Calais. They say one person died in that fire and is believed to be the homeowner, 61-year-old Ellen Gibson. She lived alone at the residence. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday to confirm her identity and determine her cause of death.

Father and son arrested for conspiring to distribute fentanyl

PORTLAND — A father and son were both sentenced in U.S. District court in Portland for conspiring to distribute fentanyl. A U.S. District judge sentenced 40-year-old Shane Seavey of Baileyville to 92 months in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiring to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl.

Machias dike discussions heat up in advance of June 28 public meeting

In 1868, Machias replaced a bridge with a dike to carry travelers across the Machias and Middle Rivers. This month, plans appear to be moving in the opposite direction, following Maine Department of Transportation’s (DOT) June 9 announcement that a bridge is the “preferred alternative” to replace the Machias dike and causeway.

Local Girl Qualifies for World Championship Horse Show

Ten-year-old Zoey Theriault, of Princeton, has qualified to go to the World Championship Morgan Show in Oklahoma, but she needs help from her community to get there. In the three years that Zoey has been riding horses she has loved everything about it. “She spends hours a day with her horses. She is as happy grooming and mucking stalls as she is riding. She just loves every aspect of being in the barn,” mentioned her mother Penni Theriault.

Kids are Making a Splash at the Calais Pool

School is out for the summer, which means the city’s Howard Fox Memorial Pool is open and summer day camp has begun. Both started on Monday. Utilized by residents and non-residents both, the pool is open seven days a week. Public swim for this year is currently slated for Mondays through Saturdays noon to 7 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m.

Biss and friends to open Eastport concert series July 1

A concert with Gregory Biss and friends will open EAC’s annual Concert Series at 7 p.m. on July 1. The program will include piano music by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Glass & Biss. One of Biss’ compositions on the program, “Routes”, was written more than 50 years ago and features piano and trombone, both of which are manipulated electronically in live time. Jane Lanctot, piano, and Gene Nichols, trombone, will join Biss for this piece.
