After FOX45 inquiry, MD unemployment debit cards will stay active until October 1

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - After FOX45 News started asking questions, the Maryland Department of Labor extended the use of debit cards for unemployment claimants statewide. Maryland's Labor Department announced in the spring that it was phasing out Bank of America debit cards and would be implementing direct deposit or paper checks for benefit payment through a new contract with Wells Fargo.

East Towson Residents Win Legal Round Over Affordable Housing Project

Opponents of a planned affordable housing apartment building in historically Black East Towson have won a victory in the Baltimore County Board of Appeals. Residents have been battling the proposed Red Maple Place, saying it would threaten their neighborhood. Republican County Councilman David Marks, who represents Towson, said the Board of Appeals blocked the development over concerns the building would not be compatible with the community. Marks said the developer, Homes for America, should look for another site.

A former Hecht Co. department store downtown has been sold to new owners with plans to convert it to 107 market-rate apartments with street-level retail. The seven-story building at 300 W. Fayette St. changed hands for an undisclosed price, said Gary Olschansky, a broker at Trout Daniel & Associates, who helped broker the deal. An adjoining brownstone that once housed Robert L. Richardson Mortgage Co. was also part of the deal.
