Cherokee School Board discusses end-of-year budget

Most of the Thursday, June 23 meeting of the Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) Board of Education was spent in a closed session to discuss personnel issues. The first part of the meeting was open and began with an update of the finances on the school and the Board. Ashford Smith, of the Cherokee Boys Club, and Howard Wahnetah, of CCS Finance, were present to offer these reports.

Across WNC, reproductive rights supporters take to the streets

Across Western North Carolina, protesters took to the streets in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to overturn the federal right to an abortion. In Sylva, the local chapter of the Women’s March organization gathered about 150 supporters of reproductive rights. BPR was at the march.

Two held without bond in alleged mass shooting threat

Two men are being held without bond in the Jackson County Detention Center after allegedly threatening a mass shooting in a group text conversation on social media. Nicholas Selby, 23, and Robert Ryan, 21, both of Austin, Texas, are charged with communicating a threat of mass violence to an educational property. Additionally, Selby is charged with felony possession of a schedule I controlled substance, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of a schedule III controlled substance. Ryan faces a charge of possession of a schedule VI controlled substance related to his arrest in Haywood County.
