Allyson Reust is Mini SWKS 2022

Featuring young ladies from all over Southwest Kansas, the Miss SWKS pageant features three age categories – Mini, Little and Miss. In early June, Liberal’s Allyson Reust took home the crown in the Mini SWKS category. The soon-to-be fourth grader at Prairie View Elementary competed in the 2021 pageant as well, and she shared some of her memories from last year.

BJ’s Strike Out 18 in Win Over Denver

The Liberal Bee Jay pitchers struck out 18 Denver Cougar hitters on the way to a 7-1 win Friday night at Brent Gould Field. Jackson Berry went four innings with seven strikeouts, Robert Bonilla pitched four shutout innings with nine strikeouts and Colby Diduch went one inning with two K’s.

Blair Leaves Bee Jays for Division 1 Job

Bee Jay head coach Jim Blair informed his Liberal Bee Jay team Wednesday afternoon that he wouldn’t be able to coach them again in BJ uniforms. He has taken a division 1 coaching job and drove Thursday to that destination. The school will be named in the near future as Blair wanted to wait on the official announcement from the school. Blair coached the BJ’s to a 12-4 start and a 10-1 record in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League. Blair’s coaching experiences include over 18 years as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for UTSA, Dallas Baptist University, and Sam Houston State University. He was a high school coach at Pieper High School in the San Antonio area and coached two years at Canyon High School in the San Antonio area.

Enrollment has begun at Bright Start Early Learning Center. To enroll, parents need to call the Newcomers Center in Liberal at (620) 604-1620 to schedule an appointment. Injury accident Saturday sends woman to hospital

An injury accident occurred Saturday evening at approximately 8:41 p.m. on U.S. Hwy 83 at Jewell Street. A 2007 Nissan Maxima being driven by Alondra Beyna-Chavez, 22, of Liberal, turned south onto Highway 83 from Jewell Avenue. The Nissan entered the northbound lane of traffic. A 2003 Peterbilt semi being driven by Julio Cesar Barboza, 26, of Liberal, was traveling northbound and struck the Nissan.

Bee Jays Win Big After Blair’s Farewell

Blair informed the team Wednesday afternoon at Brent Gould Field before Liberal’s non league game against the Dodge City A’s. The team Blair put together showed no signs of being in the doldrums after their coach left. The Bee Jays run ruled the visiting Dodge City A’s 11-1 in eight innings.

LFD called to residential fire Tuesday

The Liberal Fire Department was called into action shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday to a structure fire on Bluebell Road. “The first arriving fire and law enforcement officers encountered heavy smoke and fire from the rear of the residence. Additionally, the presence of vehicles in the driveway gave indication that the residence may be occupied,” a release from Liberal Fire Chief Kelly Kirk noted. “As firefighters prepared to make entry, the homeowner arrived and confirmed that no one was inside the home. A transitional attack was made to darken down the main body of the fire and allow entry into the home to complete the extinguishment. The fire was declared under control at 10:25 a.m.

Liberal Police Investigate Attempted Murder

On Sunday June 26th, at approximately 8:35pm, officers of the Liberal Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of South Tulane in reference to a shooting. While there, officers learned that a 4 door, silver vehicle, pulled up in front of one of the homes. A 21 year old male went to see who was in the vehicle and was shot several times. The 21 year old male was transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with non-life threatening injuries.
