Axton man sentenced in the shooting death of Martinsville man

An Axton man has been sentenced in Henry County Circuit Court in connection with the shooting death of a Martinsville man. Taylor Paige Thomas, 24, of Axton has been sentenced to 13 years with five years and six months suspended and $16,495.77 in fines, restitution and costs for an amended charge of voluntary manslaughter and three charges of brandish a firearm. Charges of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and malicious shoot in an occupied dwelling were dismissed.

One Arrest Made Other Suspects Remain Unidentified in North Avenue Shooting

An arrest has been made in one of the shooting incidents that occurred Monday evening. 18-year-old male Xzavion Issaih Smith, was located on Tuesday evening by the Danville Police Department. Smith was arrested for attempted malicious wounding, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Smith was part of a group of people outside a home when a gold SUV drove by and opened fire, and he returned fire. Police have also recovered the gold SUV and are processing it as the investigation continues. The suspect(s) who fired from the SUV at the group of people and are believed to have opened fire on another car later in the evening are still being sought. The investigation is active and ongoing and the Danville Police Department is still looking for anyone with information about either of these incidents and encourages them to call the department or Crimestoppers. Anyone with information may be eligible for a cash reward.

Danville Public Works to Close Intersection Thursday

Danville Public Works will be closing the intersection at Piedmont Drive and Old Mt. Cross Road Thursday. Crews will be replacing damaged signal wires and during the repairs lights will be powered down. Work will start around 7:30 and should be completed later in the afternoon. There will be no left turns off of Piedmont drive during this time. Individuals wishing to turn onto Piedmont from Old Mt. Cross will only be allowed to make right hand turns to join the flow of traffic. The same goes for those leaving the Piedmont Mall Parking lot.

Former supervisor passes away at age 79

A former Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisor passed away Aug. 9 at age 79 at Roman Eagle Nursing Home. Harville served on the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors from 1996 through the end of 2015 when he opted not to seek reelection. He represented the Westover district, including serving as chairman for six years. He also held the position of chairman for the Metropolitan Planning Commission, Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Authority (RIFA) and Pittsylvania County Service Authority. He was a member of the Pittsylvania County Planning Commission, Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Service Advisory Committee and a member of the Danville Life Saving Crew Board of Directors. Harville was a vital part of establishing the Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department where he volunteered for a number of years.

Ringgold duo place at Bassmaster Nationals

Ringgold Bassin members Kasey Ferguson, Jakari Thomas and boat captain Jimmy Ferguson finished among the top 12 in the nation at the 2022 Abu Garcia Bassmaster High School Championship. The high school fishing nationals were held Aug. 11-13 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S. C. and Ringgold Bass’in was one of four teams from Virginia competing in the event. Out of 314 teams from the United States and Canada, Ringgold Bassin was one of the top 12 teams competing on the final day of the three-day tournament.

Martinsville couple sentenced in father’s death

A Martinsville man and woman will spend three months in jail for neglecting and abusing the father of the man, resulting in the father’s death. Jeffrey Louis Ihrig, 51, and Crystal Rae Painter, 45, of 85 Lancer Lane in Martinsville appeared in Henry County Circuit Court on Wednesday where they were sentenced to 10 years in prison with nine years and nine months suspended. Both were ordered to pay $5,488 in fines and costs.
