Auburndale, Florida – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is currently Investigating a vehicle crash on Old Dixie Hwy and Taylor Rd. According to the public information spokesperson with the PCSO the occupant of the vehicle appears to be suffering from a gunshot wound. How or when the occupant was shot is not available at this time. The accident occurred at 10:57am and deputies were called to the scene minutes later.

First Case Of Rabies Confirmed In Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, PCSO Animal Control responded to Poyner Road in Polk City, in reference to a fight between a dog and a raccoon. The owner of the Tibetan terrier mix separated the two animals and dispatched the raccoon; Animal Control responded, retrieved the raccoon carcass, and sent it to the state laboratory in Tampa to be tested for rabies. The positive rabies was confirmed two days later.

CSX’s Problem-Plagued Repairs Continue to Delay Reopening of Ewell Road

Repairs to the CSX Ewell Road rail crossing between Old Hwy. 37 and South Florida Avenue have been postponed again. Specialized equipment needed to complete the work has broken down and CSX is reporting that work will not resume until Monday. If the remainder of repairs proceeds as planned, Ewell Road is expected to reopen late Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday morning. Repairs were suspended for several days earlier this week so crews could respond to an emergency incident at their Lakeland rail yard.

Polk health director still urging vaccinations as county's rate lags behind state

Six months after the first needles entered the first arms in Polk County, fewer than half of the eligible population has received a vaccination against COVID-19. The latest information from the Florida Department of Health shows that 47% of residents age 12 and older have gotten at least one shot. That is lower than the statewide rate of 55%. The weekly report issued June 11 doesn’t indicate how many have received a full series of vaccinations.

"It is significant because since 1866 there have been celebrations by people of African American descent. Now we are in 2021, and it is finally being recognized as a national day," Doris Moore Bailey, regional director of Juneteenth festivities for Florida, Georgia and South Carolina explained.
