PfISD to provide limited K-12 virtual learning option using ESSER, local funding

Pflugerville ISD announced July 29 that it will offer a limited virtual learning option to its students for the 2021-22 school year. There are a limited number of spots available for district families who want to have their children attend virtually. Funding for this program will be sourced from $1.6 million in local monies and $1 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief grants, according to an email shared with district parents by Superintendent Douglas Killian.

New nursing college to open campus at Austin-Round Rock border

The St. David’s Surgical Center in far North Austin is home to a new nursing college program set to welcome its first students before the end of the year. St. David’s HealthCare announced July 27 that Galen College of Nursing is opening a new campus in Austin. The campus is located at 1201 W. Louis Henna Blvd., Austin, in the medical office building located next to St. David’s Surgical Hospital.

As Austin sees its fourth COVID-19 surge of the pandemic, Austin ISD has swiveled back to planning to offer a virtual learning option this fall. The decision came just before a special called AISD Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, July 26, and mere days after Austin and Travis County moved to Stage 4 of the local COVID-19 Risk-Based Guidelines. Although the state's reluctance to fund virtual learning has not changed – and AISD is still trying to navigate choppy financial waters – the district will offer virtual instruction this fall to students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Oklahoma, Texas to become SEC members in 2025

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) announced Friday it has granted membership to the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas at Austin starting on June 1, 2025. Both Texas and Oklahoma’s board of regents unanimously voted to allow the schools to leave the Big 12 Conference and join the SEC at that time.
