Patrick Ratcliffe Jr. Killed in Auto Accident on I-10 in Sealy, TX

Sealy, TX -- May 19, 2021, 36-year-old Patrick Owen Ratcliffe Jr. was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 in Austin County. Authorities say the incident happened around 11:45 p.m. on I-10 near mile marker 715. Preliminary investigation suggests Ratcliffe was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on the I-10 frontage road when he reportedly disregarded warning signs and traffic blockers for a closed construction site. The pickup hit a barrel and continued for another mile and a half along the paved but unfinished construction area. It finally collided with a heavy-duty forklift that was parked and inactive in the work site.

Heat advisory issued until 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Austin County until 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 15. “Heat index values up to 109 expected. Abundant sunshine and light variable winds will make it feel very hot,” the statement says. “Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.”

Emergency responders from within Austin County participated in a mass casualty active shooter training drill Thursday morning at Bellville High School. Agencies who took part in the training exercise included Austin County EMS, the Bellville Volunteer Fire Department, Sealy ISD Police, the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, the Bellville Police Department, the Bellville Medical Center ER, and the Austin County Special Response Team, which is comprised of specially trained officers from multiple law enforcement agencies from within and outside of Austin County.

Local Emergency Responders Participate in Active Shooter Drill

Bellville High School was the host site for an active shooter/mass casualty drill. First responders from the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Sealy ISD Police Department, Bellville Police Department, Austin County Special Response Team, Austin County EMS , the Bellville Volunteer Fire Department, and the Bellville Medical Center ER all received hands on practical training. In a study of 160 active shooter incidents in the United States between 2000 and 2013, it was found that incidents in educational facilities account for some of the higher casualty counts and 1 IN 4 workplace mass shootings since 2006 were carried out in a government building. With statistics like that, the need for this type of training is invaluable; let’s pray that this training is never needed. Body The Honorable Gladys Marie Oakley passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at her home in Bellville, Texas. She was born on August 15, 1926, in Bleiblerville, Texas. Gladys worked on the family farm tending the corn and cotton fields and helped her family with the many farm animals and chores. She attended the Victoria School as an elementary student where students either walked or rode a horse 2 miles each way. Gladys then attended Bellville High School, and upon graduation, went on to earn her BBA from the University of Houston. She then earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston School of Law in 1957, where she was one of only two women in her graduating class.

Turnbull signs off after 34 years

Body After 34 years of service to Austin County Emergency Medical Services, Assistant Chief Jim Turnbull signed off and entered retirement last Wednesday, May 26. Turnbull originally found his interest in EMS when he had a construction accident in 1986 and soon after enrolled in an EMT class at the Methodist Church sponsored by Houston Community College. He said his first event was in 1987 but at that time, the county only offered basic life support (BLS) assistance even though Turnbull had special skills to perform advanced life support (ALS).
