The city of Aurora has recognized 18 community volunteers and four organizations with Community Spirit Awards for helping make Aurora a great place to call home. These awards are presented annually to individuals, organizations and businesses who have demonstrated ongoing leadership, a commitment to volunteerism and involvement in the Aurora community.

Neighborhood Improvement Awards

The city of Aurora has awarded $60,000 in grant funds to 14 groups across all city wards as part of its 2022 Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program. These competitive grants of up to $5,000 each promote projects that improve a neighborhood's physical condition, enhance pride and identity, increase neighborhood communication, or bring new assets to the neighborhood that foster gathering and positive experiences. Projects range from landscaping to neighborhood cleanups.

City of Aurora Juneteenth closures

Earlier this year, the Aurora City Council recognized Juneteenth as a new city holiday, honoring the fulfillment of freedom and emancipation of enslaved African American people in the United States, and affirming the city’s commitment to be an inclusive organization and to understand the past and work together to solve future challenges. The holiday is recognized annually on June 19, and is being observed this year on June 20 because June 19 falls on a weekend. In observance of Juneteenth, some city of Aurora locations will be closed or have adjusted hours Monday, June 20, 2022.
