FDA bans Juul vaporizers from US market

LANSING, Mich. (WLUC) - The FDA announced in a press release Thursday that it is banning the sale of Juul products across the U.S., including Michigan. This includes Juul vaporizers, Juul 5.0% and 3.0% Virginia tobacco pods and Juul 5.0% and 3.0% menthol pods. The FDA added that it believes Juul vaporizers, “have played a disproportionate role in the rise in youth vaping.”

Farmer’s Markets in the Copper Country Receive an Incredible Gift

HOUGHTON/HANCOCK/CALUMET – Farmers market season is kicking off in the Copper Country. Houghton’s market was in its new location on top of the downtown parking deck last week. The event will be at the new location until construction on the pier is finished. The Hancock Tori returned to Quincy Green on Thursday. And the Calumet Farmers Market returns for the second time this summer on Saturday. From the Ground Farmers Market Collective is the organization that runs the three markets. The non-profit received an incredible gift just in time for farmers markets opening.

Finlandia Alumni Board raises $10,000 for student textbooks

On June 14, alumni, friends and family of Finlandia University joined together in support of Giving Day 2022 in an effort to raise money for student textbooks. Determined to find a way to give back to students, Finlandia’s Alumni Board (FAB) started Giving Day in 2019 and has since raised more than $60,000 in its efforts.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A U.P. nonprofit is running for a cause. Great Lakes Recovery Center is hosting its 15th annual Run for Recovery. The event will be returning in person this year, but there will also be a virtual option. To participate in the virtual event, you can walk, run, hop, skip, or even bike any distance you’d like, anywhere you’d like. The in-person walks/runs will be July 28 at 6 p.m. in Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, and L’Anse.

One hurt when car hits deer near Sheldon

SHELDON—One person was injured in a car-deer accident about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, on the Highway 60 expressway near Sheldon. Thirty-nine-year-old Reid Clifford DeVoge of Chassell, MI, was driving south on the expressway when his 2015 Subaru Legacy struck a deer near the 300th Street intersection about two miles northeast of Sheldon, according to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.

NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Michigan Tech junior Clayton Sayen (Houghton, Michigan) is among its 2022 NCAA Division II All-Region honorees Wednesday. Sayen earned top marks in the 800 meters and 1500 meter events this spring and qualified for the 1500 national finals, where he placed 11th.

Parade of Nations announced for September 17

The Parade of Nations has chosen a theme for its 2022 event that is extremely appropriate for the times we live in: The World is One. This year’s Parade of Nations will take place on September 17. International food returns this year, with international student organizations offering the cuisine of their countries. Food will be available for take-out only, at the Dee Stadium in Houghton.

Portage Lake Lift Bridge designated a landmark

HOUGHTON/HANCOCK, MI— The Portage Lake Lift Bridge has been officially designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. At a public ceremony Friday kicking off BridgeFest, commemorative plaques were presented to officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation, which were then given to the cities of Houghton and Hancock for public display on each side of the bridge.

Michigan Woman Injured In Car-Deer Crash North Of Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — A Michigan woman was injured shortly before 2:00 Tuesday morning when the vehicle in which she as a passenger struck a deer north of Sheldon. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the mishap occurred two miles north of Sheldon on Highway 60, when a southbound 2015 Subaru Legacy, driven by 39-year-old Reid Devoge of Chassell, Michigan struck a deer in the roadway.
