Atascosa County tax allocation increases 50% during payment period

With a total allocation of $761,148,697.94 in the net payment period, the state of Texas saw a 9.16% increase from a year ago. The state has a year-to-date (YTD) total of $3,318,603,725.67, 18.11% more than last year’s YTD of $2,809,721,786.58. Cities in Atascosa County also saw their sales tax trend upward except Lytle whose allocation slightly declined.

Hot temperatures, crowds at first Cinco de Mayo event

Despite reaching temperatures of 106° F and being the hottest day of 2022, an estimated 4,000 made it out to Main Street for the Cinco de Mayo en El Camino Festival in Pleasanton last weekend. The festival kicked off around noon with a presentation from Mayor Clinton J. Powell and City Manager Johnny Huizar. Guest speakers included candidate for Texas Senate District 24 Pete Flores and Martin Gonzales, Atascosa County Historical Commission Chairman.

Longtime local doctor Gerald Phillips passes away

The family and friends of Dr. Gerald Phillips, 87, are remembering the life of an Atascosa County native who gave so much to his community. Born in Jourdanton on Jan. 20, 1935, he moved to Poteet during the summer of 1950 and graduated from high school in 1953. He earned his undergraduate degree from North Texas State University and in 1959 he earned his doctorate from Southwestern Medical School. He performed a one-year internship at Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio while living in Poteet.

DR. GERALD PHILLIPS

Gerald Bruce Phillips, M.D. went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 27, 2022. He was born on Jan. 20, 1935, in Jourdanton to Alvin and Alma Phillips. He was raised in Jourdanton until the family moved to Poteet in 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Christell Myers in 1954. He completed his undergraduate studies at North Texas State University in three years and went on to obtain his Medical Doctorate from Southwestern Medical School, in Dallas, in 1959. He began practicing medicine as a general practitioner in Poteet in 1960. He moved his practice to Pleasanton in 1964 and earned his Board Certification in Family Practice in 1974. He practiced medicine in a time when small town doctors did it all. He provided care in the emergency room, performed general surgery, set broken bones and delivered over 3,000 babies. He served as the county jail physician, medical director of multiple nursing homes, and medical director of Atascosa County EMS. He was a member of the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and served as a preceptor for medical students for many years. Nutrition and vitamin therapy were a passion of his for over 40 years. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Academy of Alternative Medicine and the American College for the Advancement in Medicine.

Marty Soward grew up watching both of his uncles, Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward and retired Pleasanton Police Chief Gary Soward, in law enforcement. As a kid, his mother was stopped by highway patrol. After watching how the trooper carried himself, Marty was sold on the idea of becoming an officer just like his uncles.
