No more snow days in Macomb School District

The Board of Education agreed to have the district hold E-Learning days instead of calling off classes for emergencies such as snow storms. “On these years where you have four, five, six snow days, those really end up being four, five, six lost learning days, because when you tack them onto the end (of the school year), there’s no way of creating that continuity of learning,” said Superintendent Patrick Twomey.

Be kind to all, and watch for scammers

Interesting week. Will not be able to tell you all but will try to hit the high points. There was a group of over 100 Civil War letters written by two Bell brothers from Plymouth on a Will Sullivan auction this week. I live in Plymouth. My home was owned by a Bell family before us. I wanted to keep the letters in our area and eventually give them to the Historic Society so I started bidding. Had the bid for quite some time even though I had to raise it periodically. I have not been in on a high dollar on line auction and don’t think I was prepared for the bid to rise several thousand dollars in the last couple of minutes. Anyway, despite getting to my computer over an hour before the bidding ended, I was not able to get the letters for Hancock County. Sigh…

Hilma Annette Stover

Hilma was born Sept. 3, 1937 in Lake Mills, the daughter of George and Hilma Thompson Kilen. She married Loren Stover, Nov. 24, 1959 in Lake Mills. Hilma graduated from Lake Mills High School in the class of 1955. She then worked for the REA in Thompson, IA. After marriage, the Stovers moved to Michigan before deciding to relocate to a smaller area to raise their family. After arriving in Beardstown, Hilma quickly became known as the Cake Decorator. She made hundreds of cakes and taught many students the art of cake decorating. Hilma was a homemaker who took the responsibility of raising her children to the highest regards. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, where she served on many boards and was the office secretary for over 20 years. She was a member of Rainbow Garden Club, the Edgewood Night Homemakers, and was the leader for the Sunshine Susies 4-H club. She volunteered for the Cass County extension and fair for many years. Hilma and Loren loved to travel and made it to all of the states except Alaska. She was artistic, crafty and a joy to be around. Her family was her life, and she will greatly be missed by all those who loved her.
