Joyce M. Deiters, age 61 of Carlyle, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 14, 2022, with her family by her side. Mrs. Deiters was born in Breese, Illinois on December 31, 1960, a daughter of Henry V. and Lucille M. (nee Kuhl) Trame. She married Daniel B. Deiters in Beckemeyer on November 3, 1984.

Four injured when golf cart overturns in Wayne County

State Police say four persons were injured in a golf cart wreck about eight miles south of Fairfield in Wayne County Saturday afternoon. Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the golf cart, 29-year-old Elyse Wiser of Nashville was traveling eastbound on Wayne County Road 50N about a half-mile west of Wayne County Road 2150E when she lost control in loose gravel and overturned.

Salem Community High School graduates 139 in return to regular graduation

The Salem Community High School Gym was filled to near capacity for Sunday’s graduation ceremony that saw 139 seniors receive their diplomas. Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering said the theme of this year’s graduation is small things. He noted a number of ‘small things’ such as being the first graduating class to be able to take off their masks, embracing the new Wildcat logo on their sports uniforms, and having the largest number of graduates in the CNA program among others.

Salem City Council to give first reading to implementing fee on for profit businesses with video gaming

The Salem City Council Monday night will be asked to give first reading approval to a proposal to charge for profit businesses with video gaming machines. The proposed fee is $250, the maximum allowed by the state. The state earlier capped the fee at $50 per machine, but Salem has never had a fee in the past. The proposed new fee would go into effect July 1st of next year. Mayor Nic Farley suggested earlier the fee might help control the number of machines in.

Centralia man found guilty of drug trafficking charge

A Marion County Jury deliberated just a half-hour before finding a 31-year-old Centralia man guilty of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. Donald Hemmings of Wabash Avenue had been charged with delivering less than a gram of fentanyl on July 6th, 2020 by Centralia Police. He had been taken into custody during a traffic stop after police say they witnessed a hand-to-hand drug transaction take place in plain view. Centralia Police investigators had set up in the area after receiving complaints in the area about drug trafficking.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Carlyle Lake Project will host Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center.
