Teen, man arrested on weapons charges in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — On June 27, 2022 at approximately 11:43 p.m., Springfield Police officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of South Second Street. As the officers spoke with the occupants it was determined they were in violation of the Cannabis Control Act. Subsequently, a search of the vehicle was conducted. Along with 33 grams of suspected cannabis, a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic pistol and a 5.56 caliber Diamond rifle were recovered. The rifle was later determined to be stolen from East St. Louis. Baryon Whitley (male, 21 years old), of East St. Louis and a 17 year-old juvenile, male from Belleville were arrested.

Fans awaiting the arrival of Raising Cane’s won’t have to wait as long for the Springfield location to open, according to restaurant officials. Springfield Man Convicted Of Attempted Enticement Of A Minor

A Springfield man has been convicted of attempting to entice a minor for sexual purposes. A federal jury found 61-year-old Stacey Furlow of Peoria Road guilty of several charges. Prosecutors say Furlow believed he was chatting online with a 15-year-old, yet discussed sexual activity with the person, sent inappropriate pictures of himself, and sought the minor’s address. After two days of online contact in August of 2020, Furlow obtained the address and went to the residence for sexual contact, but was arrested at the scene.

Historic Preservation Grants Awarded

The Sangamon County Historical Society has awarded monetary grants to assist with local preservation projects. The Friends of the Original Leland Farm House will get $1,000 for improvements to the “summer kitchen” that was recently moved from the site of the historic farm. The structure was relocated to Washington Park, where it will be displayed to tell the story of the farmhouse used by several prominent 19th-Century Springfield families.

Legionella discovered in water at Jacksonville Correctional Center

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Legionella was found at a central Illinois prison. A water source at the Jacksonville Correctional Center tested positive for the potentially deadly disease. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC), there are no cases of legionnaire's inside the prison and no one tested positive.

Victim Of Fatal Shooting Identified

A 19-year-old man is dead after a shooting Sunday night in Springfield. Police say the shooting took place in the 2000 block of Lions Court. As police were responding, they encountered a vehicle at Laurel and Wirt that was transporting the victim to the hospital. EMS crews were dispatched to that location and transported the man by ambulance to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he died shortly after 7pm. Coroner Jim Allmon identifies him as 19-year-old Jamarius Williams of Springfield, and says he died of a single gunshot wound to the back.
