Members of the Woman’s Club of Cotulla continue their support of child advocacy groups throughout the year and recently delivered blankets and stuffed animals to the Children’s Alliance of South Texas (CAST). Every child served by the center receives one of each to help alleviate any anxiety they may be feeling while meeting with counselors and forensic interviewers during case investigations into abuse, neglect and domestic violence in which they and other family members may have become victims. The contribution by the club members is made annually during April, which has been designated Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Failure to yield incident at Laredo North Checkpoint leads to crash with one fatality and multiple injuries

On April 13, 2022, at approximately 9:01 a.m., a vehicle circumvented the Laredo North Border Patrol checkpoint. A Border Patrol agent observed the vehicle driving northbound on the west access road and the agent drove behind the vehicle in an attempt to conduct a record query on the license plate. The driver of the vehicle accelerated and merged northbound. The agent activated his USBP vehicle’s overhead lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop but the driver of the Honda vehicle failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The agent notified a supervisor of the pursuit and reported the vehicle was travelling at approximately 100 mph. The pursuing agent broadcasted road and traffic conditions and asked dispatch to request assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Encinal Police Department.

The Woman’s Club of Cotulla held its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 7, at the Martinez Park Conference Room for a special presentation by Assistant District Attorney Leslie Carranza on the topic of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, issues related to child abuse, and how important it is to be vigilant. Club members wore blue in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month and donated books, blankets and stuffed animals that will be delivered to Children’s Alliance of South Texas, a child advocacy center.

After beating Cotulla 16-1 last Thursday night, Jourdanton is currently on an eight-game winning streak with the playoffs just around the corner. The Squaws (23-7, 11-1) hosted their final home game against Dilley Tuesday night and will finish up at Lytle this Friday to wrap up the regular season. Lady Pirates Win Back-to-Back softball games

Holding on to 3rd place at 6-4, the Lady Pirates are closely chased by Dilley at 5-5. This past Monday, the two teams faced in Lytle and in their first meeting this year, the Lady Pirates took the win at 4-2. Another win would help seal their playoff spot. Poth continues their undefeated run in district and Jourdanton is right behind at 8-1.

Poteet holding onto playoff spot

After only giving up four hits on the mound, senior Jose Guerra helped Poteet bounce back with a 6-1 victory over Cotulla Monday night. The Aggies (5-4 in District 27-3A) are currently sitting at the fourth spot in district with just a few games remaining with hopes of clinching a playoff spot. After falling to Dilley last Friday night by just two runs, Guerra and his team knew how important it was for them to regroup heading into this game.
