Cubs catcher Willson Contreras didn't like a strike 3 call Friday vs. the Diamondbacks and wanted to make his point clear. Contreras was ejected in the seventh inning for arguing with home plate umpire Ryan Additon, after he got rung up on a fastball that appeared off the plate inside.
Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras was ejected for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. Yet, he was actually right to do so. Electronic strike zone, anyone? The system currently being tested in MLB-affiliated leagues could make its way to the bigs if moments like the one in Friday afternoon’s game between the Cubs and Diamondbacks continue to occur with regularity.

Fan fights continue to feel more and more common at sporting events. The latest example comes from Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers were hosting the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. In the video, two women were jawing at each other. One of the women knocked the hat off a man who was standing between them, and a brawl ensued. The man whose hat got knocked off took a swing at another man, and then the woman who first knocked the hat off started swinging as well. It wound up being a fight involving a half-dozen or so fans. While there was a security guard standing nearby from the outset, his efforts to break things up were futile. At the time the video ends, the fight had not yet been broken up so it is unclear how the matter was resolved or what the consequences were. Already there have been multiple fights between fans at Major League games this season. That includes at a number of Dodgers games, home and away, with at least a few having been captured on video in April and May.
With the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field in Chicago this afternoon, fireworks are likely as the Chicago Cubs host the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona starter Humberto Castellanos has shown some noteworthy reverse splits over the past three seasons, with right-handed hitters hitting .301 against him since 2019 (199 total batters faced). This year, Castellanos has yielded a .300 batting average and 45.5% flyball rate to right-handed bats. He’s held lefthand hitters relatively in check thus far (.196 average, 21.7% hard-hit rate).
The Dodgers got the 4-game sweep over the Diamondbacks, that’s the important part. The bats put up a handful of runs in the 4th inning and that was all they would need to roll past Arizona again on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles. But it was a sort of...
