Freeport offers more water to Santa Clara

While the Grant County Regional Water Project has seen little progress over the last several years, Santa Clara Mayor Richard Bauch updated village trustees during their June 9 meeting about a several-pronged offer from Freeport-McMoRan to provide 450 acre-feet of water rights to the Mining District, which he said might “regenerate the entire regional water plan.”

There is a total of 835 personnel working the fire. According to the U.S. Forest Service Gila National Forest, projected incident activity in the next 24 hours includes minimal movement expected. Limited heat remains in the Hillsboro lookout area and above Upper Well Cabin along 4080 Road. A flash flood watch remains in effect through 6:00 P.M. tonight. Individuals should be aware of the possibility of severe conditions and proceed with caution.

Forest Service: Expect flooding on Mimbres, East Fork

Grant County commissioners held their June work session Tuesday morning, and received a foreboding report from the U.S. Forest Service about flash floods to come in the wake of the still-burning Black Fire. Representatives reported that severe floods will likely occur this monsoon season, and possibly for years of monsoon seasons to come.

Officials: Rain falls over area affected by Black fire

On Saturday, officials reported that the Black fire was over 324,900 acres and 58 percent contained. According to Saturday's update, rainfall amounts varied in the area affected by the fire. New Mexico Highway 152 has reopened at milepost 40 in Kingston and milepost 15 in San Lorenzo. Officials have asked drivers to use caution and to be aware of increased traffic as crews continue to fight the fire. With heavy rains possible, officials also warn of erosion, flash flooding, and debris flowing onto roads. A real-time evacuation map is available. Part of the Gila National Forest affected by the fire remains closed.
