Mets among teams interested in Orioles’ Trey Mancini

The Mets are among teams to check in on Trey Mancini, whose market is heating up. Buck Showalter knows him from Baltimore. We suggested here they could use a hitter; Andrew Benintendi or Josh Bell also would fit. Taijaun Walker improved thanks to increased depth on his splitter, via Carlos Carrasco’s tutelage. Walker said he tried the grip last year, and couldn’t do it. But this year it’s worked wonders. Pete Alonso said that, if selected to the All-Star team, he will “strongly consider” doing the Home Run Derby again. “It’s a fun event.” Luis Guillorme should win a Gold Glove, Chris Bassitt...

In Baltimore, 6 In 10 Homicides Unsolved; A Mother Shares Her Pain After Losing Her Only Son

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Benita Henson is one of hundreds of mothers in Baltimore who are waiting for justice. Her son Keith Hamlin was killed in June 2018 on Valley Street in Latrobe Homes.  “That was my son and I loved him, and his life mattered to me and his family. He has two sisters and all of us are still hurting about his death,” Henson told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren. “His murderer is still walking around out here free living his life, and I keep calling down to homicide and it seems like I’m not getting no help from nobody.” Keith Hamlin...

Yankees looking for OF help with Aaron Hicks, Joey Gallo struggling

The Yankees are starting to look at the trade market for an outfielder — no great surprise considering the offensive struggles of Aaron Hicks and especially Joey Gallo. Juan Soto would top any big-market team’s outfield wish list, but he remains extremely unlikely to be available, and Bryan Reynolds, whom the Yankees have tried for before, is only slightly more likely to hit the market. In an extreme sellers’ market, the Royals’ Andrew Benintendi, the Orioles’ Anthony Santander and the Cubs’ Ian Happ might fit best, with the added bonus that all are left-handed or switch hitters. Benintendi will be a...

Class Of 2026 Plebes Report For Induction Day At The US Naval Academy

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The U.S. Naval Academy welcomed about 1,200 plebes, or freshmen, to its Annapolis campus Thursday. Induction Day is the official first day of “plebe summer,” and it’s a whirlwind unlike any other first day of school. Plebe summer is six weeks of basic midshipmen training — which prepares students for their first academic year at the Naval Academy. Students were ushered through various stations in which they are issued gear, learn how to salute, get haircuts and, of course, get a good dose of yelling. Nicole Dado, a junior from New Jersey, helped get the freshmen prepared for their four-year...

2022 Fourth of July Happenings Around the Beltway

From July 2 to July 4, 2022 a host of events will occur around the beltway to celebrate America’s birth. A list of local festivities has been compiled below. Independence Day, otherwise known as the Fourth of July, is commonly a time to reflect on the passage of the Declaration of Independence. Celebrations mark this country’s separation from the British Empire in 1776. The Library of Congress reported online that “observing Independence Day only became commonplace after the War of 1812.” Although a law made Independence Day a federal holiday in June of 28, 1870, some African Americans have struggled with celebrating it.
