Tribe hands St. Stephens to Bureau of Indian Education as staffing concerns arise

St. Stephen School in Arapahoe is now under the supervision of the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). The Northern Arapaho tribe had handled day to day operations, but due to allegations of sexual misconduct, nepotism, and financial fraud by former staff, the Wind River Intertribal Council voted to approve the transition to federal control. This resulted in multiple employees getting fired and requiring all staff to reapply for their positions. The school is still slated to be open in the Fall.

Fairgrounds Paving Project moving Forward at Higher Cost

The Fremont County Commissioners Tuesday approved an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded project at the county fairgrounds in Riverton for paving the deteriorating parking lot there in front of the Fremont Center and Heritage Hall. Originally authorized at $700,000, the action taken Tuesday reauthorized the project at a funding level of $920,000.

Lander City Council Agrees to Look at Pay Increase for Employees

During the monthly meeting of the Lander City Council on Tuesday, the council heard updates from the council members and department heads in attendance. During the updates, the City Treasurer, Charri Laura informed the council of some surplus monies and recommended that they consider using the surplus for pay increases for city employees. During a previous meeting, The Chief of police for Lander stated that his police officers were struggling to afford housing and needed to make a certain amount of money to live in Lander. The board agreed on that night to look at the issue in the future.

Lovell, Riverton, Hudson, South Pass are new emphasis areas for WYDOT’s Chip Sealing Operations

A Wyoming Department of Transportation chip sealing crew is scheduled to continue its summer work on WY37 northeast of Lovell beginning July 11. The crew’s revised summer schedule has the chip sealing operation moving to the south half of WYDOT District 5 and WY136 east of Riverton on July 18. Between July 18-25, 24.75 miles of WY136 (mileposts 31.50 to 6.75) will be chip sealed.

Absentee Vote Machines Confirmed to be Correctly Configured

On June 30, 2022, Fremont County Clerk’s office prepared the election machines for the absentee voting center at the Fremont County Clerk’s office in Lander. Present were County Clerk Julie Freese and Clerk’s Office staff, Fremont County Republican Chairman Ginger Bennett and Republican party representatives, and a Fremont County Democrat party representative.

Sheriff: Continuing Water Wars at an address near Lander

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reported over the past 24 hours ending at 7 a.m. on 6/29/22, the emergency dispatch center there had taken 37calls for service. During that same time, the county’s ambulance service was dispatched 13 times. Seventeen persons were booked into the Fremont County Detention Center on charges that included two Driving While Under the Influence charges, 2 other alcohol-related charges, three felony charges and 30 misdemeanor charges. The Fremont County Detention Center current has 185 inmates it is responsible for, and, of these 182 are being held in Lander and three inmates are outside of the facility.
