Sculptor Kris Connors, working with chainsaws, transforms a tree stump into a bear cub statue. This time lapse video shows the day-long project from start to finish in just over three minutes. Connors, based in Nickelsville, Va., is in high demand, booked months in advance, and travels near and far to perform his craft.

Meet some dragonflies during Saturday event at Warriors’ Path

KINGSPORT — If you’ve ever wanted to get up close and personal with dragonflies, now’s your chance. Warriors Path State Park will hold its 11th annual Dragonfly Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two dragonfly experts will lead the event, and participants will have plenty of time to observe and learn about these interesting insects.

She spotted them on her deck in the Preston Forest neighborhood of Kingsport. “My immediate mental caption was ‘Hiding In Plain Sight,’ ” Wust wrote in an email. Food City donates $50,000 to PETWORKS

KINGSPORT — A partnership between PETWORKS Animal Services and Food City has paid off for the stray cats and dogs in our region. On Friday, Food City presented PETWORKS with a $50,000 donation. The contribution came about following a fundraising event in February where Food City locations in Kingsport, Bristol and Rogersville let shoppers donate $1, $3, or $5 at the checkout with all of the proceeds going to the shelter.

Turtle Derby returns to J. Fred Johnson on May 29

The Kingsport Lions Club Turtle Derby is returning to J. Fred Johnson Stadium this year and organizers are excited to welcome community members back to the event. Last year, the club had to think outside the box a bit to keep this long-standing Kingsport tradition alive and did so by hosting the first ever “virtual” turtle derby with a limited number of masked volunteers on hand to run it.

Rabies Clinic Saturday

The Lee County Animal Hospital will hold a drive through rabies clinic tomorrow at the Lee County Vocational-Technical School Parking Lot from 10 am until 2pm. With the rules and regulations provided by the Virginia Department of Health concerning the Covid-19 Pandemic, this rabies clinic will be drive thru with clients remaining in their cars and only able to exit their cars if required to assist in the vaccination of their pet. Virginia State Law requires all dogs and domesticated cats over 4 months old to be vaccinated against rabies. The rabies vaccination will cost $10.00 each and rabies certificates and rabies tags will be provided. Lee County registration tags will also be available to purchase from Lee County Animal Control.

KINGSPORT — PETWORKS Animal Services will host its second Fur Ball Gala later this year at the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center. Dog lovers from across the region will be able to enjoy a “festive attire” event, bid on a variety of items, and have their pooches pampered in a special spa. Proceeds will go toward the operation of PETWORKS’ new facility on Stone Drive.
