4-H Council busy prepping for fair

The Washington 4-H County Council met Monday evening, June 20. Notes for this meeting were provided by Agent Jamie Axtell. Emily Williams was acting president and opened the meeting. Pledges were said and then members and leaders answered the question, “Does your club have any activities planned to help members get ready for fair?” It was reported many are going to have BBQs, pool parties and livestock tours.

Deitz named Early Childhood Professional of the Month

The Early Childhood Council for Yuma, Washington, and Kit Carson Counties (ECCYWK) recognizes an outstanding early childhood professional each month who is devoted to their profession and has the personal characteristics, knowledge, and skills necessary to provide young children with high quality early childhood care and education experiences. Each month a professional is chosen from nominations from parents, early childhood professionals and community members.

10th Annual Car Show this weekend

The Akron Old Car Club is back with their annual car show this Saturday, June 25 at Akron City Park. Main Avenue will be blocked off between 3rd Street and 4th Street for those who bring some form of transportation to be shown. This show promises to be as big or bigger than ones in the past. Annette Bowin is going to open the show at 8 a.m. by singing the “National Anthem.” The show will run until 2 p.m.

Akron Town Council swears in two more trustees

Akron Town Council met Monday evening, June 6, with Mayor Pro Tem Jared Jefferson opening the meeting with the “Pledge of Allegiance.”. After the agenda was approved, the two new trustees, Brittani Kusel and Braden Brent, were sworn in. Matt Richardson was then appointed Town Attorney; Dencia Raish was appointed Town Clerk/Treasurer; and Shane Watson was appointed Public Works Director.

Hydrate Our Heroes

The Akron Volunteer Fire Department is stocked up for the summer months. Equitable Savings and Loan coordinated a ‘Hydrate Our Heroes’ campaign, collecting cases of water and Gatorade for the local department. From May 20 through June 10, 12 cases of water and 15 eight-packs of Gatorade were donated by generous members of the community. McDonald’s doing double duty with Yard of the Month

Akron Chamber of Commerce has chosen the home of Pat and Betty McDonald at 742 West 11th Street as June’s Yard of the Month. The McDonald’s have a sign in their yard that reads ‘End NF’, along with the name ‘Brooke’. Brooke, the granddaughter of Pat and Betty, has Neurofibromotosis. The sign also has the website, where you can go to get more information about this condition. CTF stands for Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Akron Pool up and running

The opening of the swimming pool feels like the unofficial start of summer. The Akron Swimming Pool opened its doors for the 2022 season Sunday, June 5, with Kilee Randel and Crystann Brown teaming up to manage the facility. With the weather expected to be on the cooler side for the next week, patrons are eager to see those temperatures warm up so they can really take advantage of what the pool has to offer.

Commissioners hold brief meeting

Washington County Commissioners met Tuesday, May 31 for one of the shortest meetings on record. The meeting lasted a total of seven minutes, with Commissioner Lea Ann Laybourn there in-person and Commissioners Kent Vance and Tony Wells present via ZOOM. Colorado Counties Incorporated (CCI) is holding their summer conference in Colorado Springs and Commissioner Laybourn and County Administrator Misty Peterson left soon after the meeting to attend.
