Heflin’s Independence Day bash brings in star-spangled crowd

HEFLIN — Heflin residents and their friends kicked off Independence Day celebration a couple of days early Saturday in the city’s park. Just east of Ross Street at Heflin City Park, the smell of salty pork rinds and barbecued hamburgers filled the air as kids ran freely, their faces sticky with watermelon juice.

All-Calhoun County boys tennis: Goode helped Faith Christian unseat Oxford at Red Wilder Invitational

Faith Christian is a good program in the Calhoun County high school tennis scene. In 2022, the Lions were Dameon Goode. For coaching Faith to the Red Wilder Invitational championship this season, ending Oxford’s five-year reign over the de facto county tournament, Goode is The Anniston Star’s Calhoun County coach of the year for boys tennis.
