More Waukee students may have to walk to class next semester

WAUKEE, Iowa — More students may have to walk to school this upcoming year in Waukee. The Waukee School Board just expanded the "walk zone" for elementary students. Now students living within three-quarters of a mile of the school will not get bus rides and cannot pay to ride.

Ankeny School Board appoints Joshua Palik to vacant seat, avoiding special election

The Ankeny School Board made an appointment to a vacant seat on the board Tuesday, which precluded a possible special election. After navigating a complicated process, the board came to a consensus and unanimously chose to appoint Joshua Palik to fill the vacancy left by Trent Murphy, who recently resigned. The seat will be up for election again in the regular November 2023 school board election, unless there is a special election before then, which is unlikely.

Central Iowa boating, bike projects receive public funding from federal programs

The state will give public money to a couple of central Iowa outdoor recreation projects. The Iowa Economic Development Authority will provide $2.5 million to Polk County Conservation to improve Easter Lake on Des Moines' south side, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced this week. The money will pay for fishing boats, canoe and kayak launches, a playground and an environmental learning center.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday that she’ll seek to end most abortions in the state by turning to the courts. She’ll ask them to relax the legal standard used to evaluate restrictions and to reverse a decision that halted a ban as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. That law bans abortions once cardiac activity can be detected. A state court judge found the 2018 law unconstitutional under previous Iowa Supreme Court rulings. However, the high court on June 17 reversed previous precedent which would allow the law to be considered under a lower legal threshold.
