Road to Charleston continues with start of regional series

It’s been a difficult prep sports season all across the board. Baseball — just like softball, tennis and track — did not get to crown a champion last spring after spring sports were canceled due to the pandemic. This year, roughly three weeks later than normal, three baseball champions will be determined to close out a 2020-21 athletic year no one will ever forget.

Brumfields combine for 875 baseball victories

ONA — Cabell Midland assistant baseball coach George Brumfield went to the pitcher’s mound with one objective — to get ejected. The veteran baseball man wasn’t particularly upset with the umpire Bruce Hensley, but the Knights had just lost a three-run lead and were playing lackluster ball in a must-win sectional tournament game. Brumfield needed to fire up his players. The ploy worked, as Cabell Midland scored five runs in its next at bat on its way to a 12-4 victory.

Parkersburg girls take gold in shuttle hurdles

CHARLESTON –The girls’ side of the 2021 Class AAA state track meet Saturday from Charleston saw local teams jockeying for position. While Jefferson took home the top spot as a team, Parkersburg brought home local bragging rights with an eighth-place finish. The 24 Big Red points came via a majority of relay performances, and that was especially true during the afternoon’s shuttle hurdles final. The team of Lily Wharton, Claire Tatterson, Kendal Domenick and Addison Gherke brought home gold in the event by holding off hard-charging challengers from Wheeling Park by a bit less than a second (1:05.68). Earlier in the day, Wharton and Gherke scored the only individual points for the red and white during the 300 hurdles. Wharton (45.52) achieved a podium finish in third, while Gherke (45.69) was right behind her in fourth.
