Male volunteers needed for Hospice of Michigan in Alpena

ALPENA, MI. – Hospice of Michigan is asking the people of Alpena to help… Specifically, men. People in hospice facing a life limiting illness need support. Volunteers through Hospice of Michigan provide compassion to these patients and families. In Alpena, 90 percent of those volunteers are women. The nonprofit does its best to pair hospice volunteers to fit patients needs. However, with such little male volunteers, this can be difficult.

Michigan Drownings Higher Than Normal

During the summer water sports are a fun pastime to enjoy yourself and the nice weather. To date in 2022 there have been around 32 drownings in Michigan. Alpena Township Fire Chief Mark Hansen said, “well I would say to the area residents of Michigan that might be coming up to our Great Lakes to swim there is an under current at times so swim within your abilities, always have a partner swimming with you and if you have questionable things about your swimming abilities a life jacket would be the first thing I would recommend.”

Keeping pets in Alpena safe during summer heat

ALPENA, MI. – Some pet owners love to take their animals with them everywhere. But, even a quick trip to the grocery store can be unsafe for your pet in the heat of summer. Huron Humane Society Manager, Kierstin Stark, said there are risks to having pets in the car this time of year. “When you leave a dog in the car at temperatures as low as 70 degrees, is still too warm. It can reach 90 degrees in just fifteen minutes in an enclosed vehicle. Sometimes, it is best to just leave them at home and not to risk it. It can definitely be fatal to them.”
