Quick Hits: Rhule, Fitterer Discuss Start of Training Camp

SPARTANBURG, SC - Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer spoke to the media today as the Panthers moved into Wofford College for training camp. No bombshells were dropped by the two men put in place to lead the Panthers into a new era, but important information was shared nonetheless. Here are a couple of quotes that stood out.

Panthers Place LB Frankie Luvu on Reserve/COVID-19 List

Tuesday morning, the Carolin Panthers announced that linebacker Frankie Luvu has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Luvu spent the first three years of his career with the Jets where he had a limited role on defense and spent the majority of his time on the special teams unit. Statistically, his best year was as a rookie when he finished with 22 tackles, 11 QB hits, five tackles for loss, and three sacks. In year two, he saw his playing time diminish only appearing in 69 defensive plays (6% of all defensive snaps), but bounced back this past season appearing in 23% of all defensive snaps and also made three starts.

Should the Panthers Trade for Watson or Stick with Darnold?

The Houston Texans are officially listening to offers for star quarterback Deshaun Watson. Earlier this offseason, lawsuits were filed against Watson for sexual harassment. To this day, all 22 lawsuits are still pending and it does not appear that he will be appearing in a courtroom anytime soon. Despite the...

53-Man Roster Projection: S Jeremy Chinn Player Profile

NFL Stats: 117 tackles, 5 QB hits, 2 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries. Jeremy Chinn had a stellar rookie campaign making plays all over the field and becoming one of the Panthers' most reliable defenders in 2020. The former 2nd round pick was in the running for Rookie of the Year all season long but was not named a finalist and not being on a winning team in a small market could have had something to do with that.

53-Man Roster Projection: Jermaine Carter Jr. Player Profile

NFL Stats: 90 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 QB hits. With Jeremy Chinn moving to safety, this opens the door for Carter to take over as the starting SAM linebacker. Carter Jr. is one of the biggest mysteries on the Carolina defense. He played well in his limited role a year ago totaling 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery but can he have that type of production playing in say 60%-70% of the defensive snaps? That remains to be seen. He played in just 27% of the defensive snaps a year ago, so it will be interesting to see how he performs with a heavier workload.

Roundtable: Which Panther Has the Most Pressure Heading into the 2021 Season?

This is an easy one for me. You could make an argument for some other guys like RB Christian McCaffrey who needs to prove he can stay healthy or CB Donte Jackson who is entering the final year of his rookie deal but for me, it's Darnold. The Panthers exercised the 5th-year option for Darnold which essentially gives him two years to prove he can be the answer at quarterback for the long-term. However, he needs to get off to a strong start and show flashes of brilliance every now and again to gain confidence and trust from not only his teammates, coaches, and the front office, but the fan base as well. If there is very little to no improvement from what he put on display in New York, the Panthers front office may start to rethink their options moving forward.

53-Man Roster Projection: LB Paddy Fisher Player Profile

NFL Stats: N/A (rookie) Fisher is a pure tackler. During his career at Northwestern, he totaled 401 tackles and 24.5 tackles for loss. He made a smooth transition from high school to the college level by notching 11 tackles during his freshman year. Of course, the jump to the NFL is a different beast but I think he will handle it well and make an impact on the special teams unit at the start of his career.

Panthers D-Line Gets Respect in Latest PFF Rankings

The Panthers are very young on the defensive side of the ball but if there is one area that defensive coordinator Phil Snow has to feel confident in, it's the defensive line. A year ago, Derrick Brown and Yetur Gross-Matos got their feet wet as rookies but now they're ready to take that next step.

53-Man Roster Projection: LB Frankie Luvu Player Profile

NFL Stats: 59 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 16 QB hits, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble. I'd expect Luvu to backup Thompson but don't be surprised to see him move around. He impressed the coaching staff during OTAs and minicamp and if that continues, they will find a way to get him on the field. The coaching staff loved the energy he brings every day and they feel like he can be a real asset to this defense in 2021.

It's Now or Never for Ian Thomas

Greatness doesn't happen overnight, it takes time. Everyone grows up dreaming of not only making the NFL but becoming one of the very best to ever play the game. Unfortunately, the reality is not everyone gets to live out that dream and if they do, a very small percent of them become legendary players.
