DSU Alumni Association hosts inaugural Past Presidents Dinner

CLEVELAND, Miss.— The Delta State University Alumni Association recently honored its past presidents during its inaugural Past Presidents Dinner. The special occasion was hosted April 9 in the Atrium of Kent Wyatt Hall. After more than a year of COVID-19 restrictions, the event was opportunity for the current and past leaders of the organization to reconnect, fellowship and discuss the past and future of the DSU Alumni Association.

MDNHA announces new Grants Leadership Academy

CLEVELAND, Miss.—The Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA) is announcing a revamped grants program, with the proposal application portal opening in summer 2022. Known as the MDNHA Grants Leadership Academy, the retooled federally-funded grants program will feature a maximum grant value of $29,500 per project. Grantee organizations must match their proposed projects at least 1:1 with non-federal in-kind or cash resources.

Gustnado captured near Tutwiler, Mississippi

TUTWEILER, Miss. (WTVA) - Corey Gee from Tutwiler shot this video of a gustnado. He shot it around 1:40 p.m. on Friday, May 13. According to WTVA Chief Meteorologist Matt Laubhan, a gustnado forms on the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow, the rain-cooled air that spills out of a storm.

Busy Tourism Season Expected For Cleveland And Rest Of The Delta

If this first part of the year’s tourism taxes is any indication, Cleveland should be in for a good summer, said Visit Cleveland Mississippi Tourism Director Sean Johnson. “Currently, we’re seeing a 14% increase in tourism tax revenues over last year, and an over 30% jump over pre-pandemic numbers. So, all of this bodes really well for us going into the summer. Other data also points to growth: our website traffic is up considerably over last year and reports from Smith Travel Research, a travel research firm we partner with, shows that demand for hotel rooms in Cleveland has lately been historically high.”

Even though Coahoma found out just recently what kind of athlete it was getting in Brooks, Tony Minor knew that about the Lady Yellow Jacket a long time ago. Brooks was valuable in several events for SHS, but was especially good in the long jump. She made the Class 6A State meet three times in the last five year and finished second at state the last two years.
