Emporia’s street rehab project may see at least one addition

It looks like Emporia’s annual street rehab project will expand. The question is which projects to add. City Engineer Jim Ubert says the city is determining whether to add part of 15th, Wilson between Third to Sixth or Polks Drive near the Cargill pet food facility on Graphic Arts Road.

Friday night lightning? Severe storm risk exists

The first half of 2022 began with snow. The second half is likely to begin with rain. The National Weather Service advised Thursday morning that “strong and severe storms” could develop Friday afternoon and evening, starting after 4 p.m. Emporia is in a level-one “marginal” area for isolated storms.

UPDATE: Repairs complete on broken water line in central Emporia

Repairs are complete and water service has been restored to customers following a water line break in central Emporia Thursday. According to the City of Emporia’s official Facebook page, the line was repaired just before 3 pm. The size of the line and cause of the break has not been divulged.

Emporia Municipal Band to play patriotic set

The Emporia Municipal Band will “Salute the USA” tonight during its weekly concert in the park. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Thursday in Fremont Park. Song selections are patriotic arrangements, such as “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Parade of the Tall Ships,” “Armed Forces Salute,” Semper Fidelis” and “America, The Beautiful.”

Police use 'force' in domestic case; officer hurt

An Emporia police officer was slightly hurt Tuesday while using “some force” to end a domestic violence situation, a spokesman said. Capt. Ray Mattas would not release exactly where the incident occurred, because that is department policy in domestic violence cases, but he said officers were called to it around 12:30 p.m.

STEM 'Imaginarium' in Kansas to Work with Local Schools

(TNS) — A nonprofit, STEM-based education organization is coming to Emporia Main Street's Incubator Space, located at 729 Commercial St., Main Street announced this week. Imaginarium, founded by Melanie Curtis and Dell Jacob, aims to brings science, technology, engineering and math to area youth through project-based learning opportunities. Both Curtis and Jacob are certified teachers, formerly employed by the USD 253 Emporia Public Schools District with a combined 33 years in education.

Spafford spent the last seven years at NCAA Division II Regis University in Denver, Colorado, serving as Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics since January 2016.

Local children invited to audition for 'Johnny Appleseed'

Missoula Children's Theatre returns to Emporia with a production of "Johnny Appleseed," as part of the Emporia Arts Council's 2021-22 Performing Arts Series. Approximately 50-60 roles are available for local students in grades 1-12. Everyone is encouraged to audition and no advance preparation is necessary. An audition will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. Monday, July 18, at Emporia High School. Those auditioning should arrive at least 30 minutes early and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

Probation ahead after Obermeyer accepts plea

Probation is ahead for an Emporia man who accepted a no contest plea instead of facing trial on rape charges. Brice Obermeyer was sentenced Tuesday to 12 months of probation with Lyon County Court Services. Obermeyer also cannot have any contact with the victim in the case and must undergo alcohol monitoring for a year.

Setup and planning continue ahead of Emporia’s Fourth of July fireworks display Sunday night

The City of Emporia’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show is coming to the Emporia State University campus Sunday evening. The show is scheduled to begin between 9:45 and 10 pm with the display set to be shot from the soccer fields north of Interstate 35. The soccer pitch on the north end of campus will be closed to the public, but the practice fields on the north side of campus and Welch Stadium will be open and are considered the best viewing points for the show.

Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness celebrates opening of Centro Hispano de Crosswinds facility

Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness has opened the doors of its newest facility aimed at increasing mental health services to the local Hispanic population. Wednesday, Crosswinds cut the ribbon on the Centro Hispano de Crosswinds facility at 320 Commercial Street. The new facility was made possible thanks to a two-year $2.3 million grant from the Federal Government.
