Our family roots are in Kossuth County (Bancroft, Whittemore, St. Joe, Algona) so we read with alarm comments by the substitute racing announcer at the fairgrounds speedway last week. He had the megaphone for the evening, and used it to complain about people with “darker-toned” skin color kneeling during the national anthem. You can find it on Twitter if you need to.

Hancock County Fair in Britt approaches

There’s a medley of events for people to hit up at this year's Hancock County Fair. Thursday at 2 p.m., there’s a cupcake contest on the free stage. Friday, at noon, flower judging begins at the Open Building. There’s a beef barbecue at the shelter house at 5:30 p.m. and stock car races at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will feature pedal pulls at 3 p.m. and automobile demolitions at 7 p.m. Then, on Sunday, fairgoers can snack on free sweet corn and take in a greased pig contest at 4 p.m. Contact the fair office at (641) 843-3820 additional information.

Four People Arrested On Drug Charges Following Harassment Complaint

Palo Alto County, IA (KICD) — Four people were arrested on drug charges following an investigation into a harassment report. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says they were dispatched to the 900 block of Inman Street in mallard. As a result of an investigation, police arrested four people, including 48-year-old Jason Langschwager. They charged him with possession of a controlled substance 2nd offense – meth, possession of a controlled substance 2nd offense – marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, harassment 3rd degree, and driving with a suspended license.

Area Hy-Vee Stores to Host Rahal Letterman Lanigan IndyCar Show Car

Hy-Vee, Inc., in partnership with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), will display a Hy-Vee-sponsored Indy show car at select store locations across Hy-Vee’s eight-state region during the month of August. The tour will make two stops in Mason City and once in Algona. The first stop will be in Algona at 1500 Highway 169 N. on Friday August 6th from 9 am to 3 pm. FAIRMONT, Minn. (AP) — A racetrack announcer who was fired by an Algona track after a racist rant was back behind the microphone last weekend in southern Minnesota. Lon Oelke announced a race at Fairmont Raceway on Friday — but not to the standing ovation that track promoter Jon McCorkell promised. McCorkell said Oelke was uncomfortable with that idea. Still, McCorkell says Oelke has support in the area and he will stand by him.
