Newman Grove Fire & Rescue responds to house fire

A house fire on Sunday evening, June 13, caused extensive damage to a two-story home at 214 North Fourth Street in Newman Grove. Newman Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with two pumper trucks at about 8:30 p.m. Fire Chief Ryan Chilson said the blaze started on the main floor and was mostly contained there, although the house sustained exterior damage and smoke damage throughout.

Boone Central Middle School, located in Petersburg since 2001, will become part of the Boone Central campus in Albion after construction is completed this summer. Construction has been well underway this spring and early summer in hopes of full completion and move-in before students arrive in the fall.

Albion had not one, but two district champions crowned in softball action this past weekend. Albion’s 18-Under traveled to Ponca and won the district title with a 4-1 record over two days. Albion began with victories over Osmond and O’Neill, then secured the championship in a virtual best two-of-three series against Battle Creek.

Anton “Tony” Klassen, 96, of Lindsay, died Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in Albion. Tony is survived by daughter: Linda (Dave) Henggeler of Colorado Springs, CO, Pat (Kent) Preister and Sue (Larry) Bender, all of Lindsay, Mary (Don) Peterson of Columbus and Teresa (Kevin) Scholl of Bloomington, IL; sons: Bill (Georgia) Klassen of St. Edward, Jim (Cindy) Klassen, Mike (Sandy) Klassen, Tony (Kathy) Klassen, Jr. and Paul (Cindy) Klassen, all of Lindsay, and John (Denise) Klassen of Humphrey; 45 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and a sister Ceil McGill of Walnut, CA.

Missoula Children’s Theatre returning next week

Auditions will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of Red Riding Hood on Monday, June 21, from 12-2 p.m. at the Boone Central Performance Gym in Albion. Michael “Mike” Joseph Mullin, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, at Lancaster Manor in Lincoln. He is survived by his wife Kay of Lincoln, children: Monica (Doug) Holland, Melinda Mullin, Daniel (Linda) Mullin, Timothy (Cherie) Mullin, Celia (Jon) Schatzky and Matthew Mullin, 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, siblings: Kay Mikwold, Hank, Bob, Sally Gallagher, Francie, Debbie Sullivan, Dennis, Norma Kirkland and Hilary Christo, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Clarence "Bud" Albracht

Clarence "Bud" Albracht, 98, of Humphrey, Neb., died peacefully Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the Columbus Community Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was on Friday, June 11, at 10 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, and Father Wayne Pavela celebrated the Mass. Private family interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Visitation was Thursday from 5-7 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:30 p.m. at the church. Visitation continued on Friday from 9 a.m. until service time, also at the church. Memorials are suggested as those of family choice.

Welcome Back Alumni — Busy day set June 19 in Albion

Albion is gearing up for several special events on Saturday, June 19. That’s the date for the annual Albion/Boone Central Alumni Banquet, and a variety of fun events are planned downtown. Fourth Street will be closed that day and night from Church Street to Market Street for a street festival.
