Yucca Elementary holds open house with FLO in tow

Yucca Elementary staff pointed parents and students to their respective classrooms during an open house at the elementary school on Aug. 8. The Open house began with a short presentation by Yucca Elementary School Principal Dr. Christina Trujillo about what to expect including bell schedules, pick up and drop off instructions, upcoming security measures such as the students being required to wear IDs, how parents can contribute and support systems for students.

Missing Benton Man Found

BENTON – A Benton man was found Friday after going missing that same day. The Franklin County Emergency Mangement Agency did not say in an alert where 91-year-old Lawrence Zicker was found, but he was last seen in the 400 block of North Du Quoin Street in Benton on Friday.

Letting good gerrymandering go to waste

Democrats in the state Legislature went to a lot of trouble to gerrymander the Second Congressional District, and now their colleagues in Washington, D.C. are squandering it. After rejecting all of the proposed maps of an independent redistricting commission, Democrats passed a map offered by Sen. Joseph Cervantes of Las Cruces that breaks up the Republican stronghold in Southeast New Mexico that had always dominated past elections in the Second Congressional District. Republicans have won all but two elections since the state expanded to three districts in 1983.

Holloman AFB MQ-9s participate in maritime exercise

Two MQ-9 Reaper drones from Holloman Air Force Base were part of the Rim of the Pacific exercise at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii between June 29 and Aug. 4. The exercise, known as RIMPAC, involved 26 nations, 38 ships, three submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel. The exercise was the largest maritime exercise in the world hosted around the Hawaiian Islands and southern California.

Pro-life win: Alamogordo becomes sanctuary city for the unborn

On Tuesday, the Alamogordo City Commission held a special meeting to discuss two pro-life resolutions. One, sponsored by City Commissioner Karl Melton of District 3, declared Alamogordo a sanctuary city for the unborn. Another that was said only to be brought forth as a weaker resolution brought forth by Mayor Susan Payne also was considered.
