Alabama finds itself near center of new college basketball landscape

After a season upended by COVID-19, the college basketball world is back to normal -- almost. Citing “public health concerns related to indoor venues,” the SEC decided last month not to hold its traditional mid-October basketball media days this fall. Instead of the conference’s hoops royalty descending on the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Mountain Brook, the schools are previewing the upcoming season from their respective facilities.

Alabama hoops lands two on All-SEC team, picked to finish second

Alabama basketball guards Jahvon Quinerly and Jaden Shackelford were each selected to the Southeastern Conference Preseason All-SEC Team, the league office announced Tuesday. Vanderbilt guard Scotty Pippen Jr. was the choice for SEC Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Quinerly and Shackelford, Arkansas' JD Notae, Kentucky's Keion Brooks Jr., Kellan Grady and Sahvir Wheeler and Tennessee's Kennedy Chandler also received votes for Player of the Year.

Arkansas landed one of its highest-rated basketball commitments of the 247Sports era on Wednesday, when five-star combo guard Nick Smith Jr. committed to the Razorbacks over Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Smith, an Arkansas native, is considered the No. 8 overall player in the 2022 class by 247Sports and is the top player in the state from the 2022 class.
