NH man charged with Addison county home invasions

BRISTOL, Vt. (WCAX) - A New Hampshire man alleged to be high on meth has pleaded not guilty to trespassing charges. Police say Isaac Crawford, 22, allegedly broke into two occupied homes in Bristol and swung a baseball bat and pick ax at the people inside and nearby. He also pleaded not guilty to reckless endangerment.

Editorial: Newton should resign — now

Sheriff Peter Newton, who was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of domestic violence and one count of unlawful restraint, got a partial reprieve by Chittenden County Superior Court Judge John Pacht when the judge allowed him to continue administrative duties as sheriff. The judge put heavy restrictions on Newton, however, by stripping him of his rights to carry a firearm, access to data from law enforcement resources, and said he was not to engage in any law enforcement activities.

Sheriff Newton pleads not guilty to assault charges

On Tuesday, Peter Newton, the Addison County Sheriff, was arrested on multiple charges including sexual and domestic assault, and arraigned in Burlington. The case began unfolding this past March when reports surfaced of a domestic disturbance at Newton’s home in late February. Police were called to the home, but no arrests were made. Upon further investigation, prosecutors say they determined evidence of a sexual assault and according to court papers, Newton placed fear in the victim that she would suffer imminent bodily injury.
