Hempfield Area, Franklin Regional baseball advance to WPIAL Championships. A pair of Westmoreland County baseball teams will be playing for district gold this week, as Hempfield Area in 6A and Franklin Regional in 5A both advanced to the finals. The third-seeded Spartans secured their berth, the first in program history, courtesy of a 12-2 victory against No. 2 Norwin on Tuesday. The Spartans used a pair of explosive innings to dominate their rivals, as Hempfield Area scored five runs in the second inning, and tacked on six runs in the seventh to seal the outcome. Christian Zilli produced three hits and four RBIs, while Jayson Jacob, Phil Fox, Ryan Firmstone, and Carson Shuglie each had two-hit performances. Jake Kramer, meanwhile, worked into the sixth inning on the hill, limiting the potent Norwin lineup to just two runs on seven hits. Hempfield Area will face top-seeded North Allegheny on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Wild Things Park in Washington. Meanwhile, the Panthers secured their spot in the 5A title game, courtesy of a 9-1 win against No. 13 Peters Township last Tuesday. FR received a three-run homer by Caden Smith, while pitcher Brian Pirone earned the win, working six innings while allowing just one run on two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Franklin Regional will oppose No. 2 Bethel Park, Tuesday at 4:30 at Wild Things Park.
