Chandler police have identified a man shot and killed by an officer on Wednesday as 39-year-old Richard Ring.

Police said officers responded to calls of a robbery near Alma School and Warner roads about 11:52 a.m. and received reports that a man had shoplifted from a store and fought with an employee before fleeing out the back.

Witnesses reported seeing Ring jumping fences into residential yards, according to Chandler police.

Officers found Ring inside a home he had broken into and ordered him to drop a knife he had grabbed inside, police said.

Police said Ring refused to drop the knife and an officer shot him. Ring was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Ring didn't have a residence in Chandler but had family ties, police said.
