CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — A shooting involving officers led to Chandler police taking a domestic violence suspect into custody on Tuesday afternoon. Police surrounded a neighborhood near Ray and Dobson roads and found 40-year-old Alan Burgener, who was wanted for reportedly shooting his ex-girlfriend on Monday.

According to Sgt. Emma Huenneke with Chandler police, investigators arrived at the scene after Burgener was spotted by a witness. Huenneke says an officer shot at Burgener, but he wasn’t hit by the gunfire. Burgener was then arrested and taken to the hospital for injuries not related to the shooting, police said. Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence in the area near Ivanhoe and Shannon streets. No officers were hurt.

“A citizen called us to report a subject that appeared to be Alan. When she gave us a location, we were able to respond quickly. Patrol and investigative units were working in the area anyways. And once we got to this point, he was taken into custody,” said Huenneke.

Just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday, police were called to a shooting on Santa Anna Street, near Ray and Dobson roads. They found a woman shot, and she was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the woman was shot during a fight with her ex-boyfriend, Burgener. Investigators say Burgener ran from the house after the shooting, broke into a nearby apartment, and stole a car. The shooting led to a lockdown of several area schools as officers searched the neighborhood.

“It’s very discomforting for me to see all of this happening on my doorstep in this neighborhood. Because I’ve been here almost twenty years, and this is the first time it’s ever happened to me,” said ASU student Johnny Nguyen.

According to Chandler police, Burgener has previously been connected to other crimes, including assault, domestic violence, disorderly conduct, trafficking of stolen property, and multiple drug-related offenses. He does not have a permanent address but has family and other contacts in Mesa.

This is the 20th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 26th in the state in 2023.
