Speeding driver responsible for multi-vehicle crash that injured 2, closed I-696 for three hours in Macomb County: MSP

CENTER LINE (WWJ) - A serious traffic crash involving five vehicles on I-696 in Center Line, leaving two people injured on Tuesday evening, was caused by a sedan driving too fast, state police said.

Troopers from Michigan State Police's Metro North post responded to reports of a serious crash on the freeway at Van Dyke Ave around 6:20 p.m. on June 6.

Authorities were forced to to close I-696 when the got to the scene. Base on their initial investigation, troopers said the driver of a Honda sedan, identified as a 32-year-old man from Warren, was speeding in the eastbound lanes of the freeway when he rear ended a Dodge Challenger in the right lane.

The Honda spun out to the left and hit a Ford F-150 before it was rear ended by another truck in the left lane.

As a result of the impact, the Ford F-150 rear-ended another vehicle, which fled the scene, troopers said.

The 32-year-old man driving the Honda was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Dodge was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The freeway was closed for three hours as crash investigators processed the scene. It reopened just before 9:30 p.m.
