Mark the calendar for a Juneteenth Block Party that will cause a partial closure of Gibson Street in Cedartown next weekend.

The Juneteenth celebration being organized by Roderick Turner got permission from the Cedartown Commission back in May to shutdown a portion of Gibson Street from Jones Street to Pace Street for the block party scheduled from 12 p.m. to dark.

The Juneteenth celebration on Gibson Street will feature a DJ, live band, a pop-up shop and bounce houses for youth.

Speakers will also be involved with the event, along with Kingdom of NUMI.

Turner hopes the Block Party will provide an opportunity to continue celebrations throughout the evening for the annual holiday.

The official Juneteenth holiday is being celebrated this year on Monday, June 19. It commemorates the emancipation of slaves, and marks the day when the final group of slaves were set free in Texas. The holiday originated in Galveston, and became officially recognized in 2021 as the first new Federal holiday since the inclusion of Martin Luther King Day in 1983.

Check back for coverage from the upcoming Juneteenth celebration next weekend.
