Sacramento County Sheriff expected to address issues of fentanyl, other drugs in jail 01:21

SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento County Sheriff is expected to address on Thursday the issues of fentanyl and drugs in jails.

Last September, questions mounted after drugs and dangerous contraband wound up behind bars at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Investigators believe a medical assistant assigned to the jail abused her position to smuggle items inside.

A year later, new details have also emerged about the death of the K Street mass shooting suspect Smiley Martin, who died of a drug he didn't have a prescription for.

Martin died in his jail cell back on June 8. The coroner says he did not have a prescription for methadone, the drug that killed him. It was unclear where Martin had gotten it, but the autopsy report says he had no prescription or even noted prior use of the drug.

Martin's death was the third that month at the jail.

Sheriff Jim Cooper is expected to speak at 10 a.m.
