SACRAMENTO – A man was taken to the hospital after a shooting in north Sacramento involving officers on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened in the area of Beloit Drive and Bell Avenue sometime around 4:30 p.m.

Police responded to the area for reports of a suspicious vehicle, saying it had suspended registration. Police said the person believed to be associated with the vehicle abandoned it before officers could contact him.

The man was then found on top of an RV. When police tried to contact him, they said he jumped off the RV and officers tried to detain the man. This is when police said an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Police originally said no "involved officers" were injured, but said late Saturday night that an officer sustained minor injuries.

They said the man was taken to the hospital and is stable. He was being held in custody for an outstanding felony no-bail warrant for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

On Sunday, police identified him as 39-year-old Santino Marez of Sacramento. When he was released from the hospital, he was booked into jail for the use of violence or force to prevent officers from performing their duties and the above felony warrant.

Police said no weapons were found on him at the time he was taken into custody.

It's unclear how many shots were fired.
