2 teenagers rescued from Coney Island Beach one day after drownings 00:34

NEW YORK - Two teenage sisters pulled from the water in Coney Island have been pronounced dead.

The two teens, 17 and 18, went into the water Friday night at around 8 p.m., after lifeguards were off duty.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene with boats and divers.

The girls were pulled from the water in critical condition at around 9:30 p.m. and rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead just after 10 p.m. Their names haven't yet been released.

"I saw a lot of cops and firemen running towards the situation, and then the next thing you know, the family of the victims they go to the same area but were told to go to the boardwalk," witness Danny Quinones said. "It's a very tragic event."

Initially, authorities believed they were looking for a third person, but it turns out there was no third person in the water.

Officials have repeatedly cautioned beachgoers not to enter the water whenever lifeguards are not on duty.

Teenage boys rescued from same beach

Less than 24 hours later, two teenage boys had to be pulled out of the water near West 22nd at the same beach.

Police say a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy went into the water around 6:10 p.m. Saturday, after lifeguards were done for the day.

According to police, the 14-year-old declined medical attention and the 16-year-old was taken to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition.

The beach was crowded with families trying to cool down on an uncomfortably humid summer day, and many beach-goers said they suspected what had happened when they saw first responders.

"There were two fire ... trucks right there. One went this way, then the second one came, then the helicopter came and we already knew," said Jacqueline Cintron, from Pennsylvania.

"The moment we saw the chopper, we said it ... We knew that something happened," said Marilyn Pastoriza, from Tampa.

"I just try to watch out for the rip currents because they will push you back very hard, and it's hard to get through it," Quinones said.

Swim safety in focus in NYC

Just two weeks ago, teenagers Elyjha Chandler and Christian Perkins died after disappearing in a wave at Jacob Riis Beach. Authorities spent days searching for them. The deaths prompted Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and other leaders to call for changes to improve safety at city beaches .

One of their proposals was to extend the hours lifeguards are on duty at beaches, but the Parks Department said that would create new problems, since those lifeguards spend hours in the sun as it is and "the job is extremely susceptible to exhaustion and fatigue... and adding more more hours to their regular hours would put undue stress on them and would inhibit their ability to properly surveil the beaches and keep beachgoers safe."

Children should be taught how to swim as toddlers. My mom made sure her kids could swim. We took Red Cross lessons starting Memorial Day. By year 2, we knew how to swim, but we went to Lifesaving. 🥶 I was proud of Mom when she put her fears aside & took lessons in her 40s. My poor Dad learned to swim in a cold west PA quarry "the same day his dog did" the story goes. Teens threw my Dad's dog into the quarry. When he protested, they threw my Dad in, too! Can you imagine? I cried about his dog when, as a child, I heard that story. But he advised that Tippy learned to swim way quicker than he did. 😊 I asked him what would have happened if he sunk before the shore? He said "I'd like to think that those boys would have rescued me." I later heard him tell Mom that it was "those hooligan Quinn boys" who tossed him & Tippy in the quarry. Dad never took Tippy to the quarry again. He always said Tippy made out WAY better than he on that scary day...when they both learned to swim.
