BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — With school back in session, several programs in the Birmingham area are prepared to help students succeed both in and outside of the classroom.

The Birmingham Parks and Recreation will offer tutoring with teachers and lessons on conflict resolution throughout the city as part of the “Safe Haven After School Care Program.”

Launched by Mayor Randall Woodfin in 2022, the free program is geared for kindergarten through sixth-grade students and begins Sept. 9.

“A lot of the parents are struggling, they’re going through difficult times,” Recreation Superintendent David Primus said. “We see it as an opportunity for us at Birmingham Park and Recreation to meet the needs of our community.”

The after-school program is scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Certified teachers are at the centers Monday to Wednesday.

Parents must register their child at one of the six participating recreation centers at Center Park, Ensley, Fountain Heights, Memorial and Martin Luther King Jr. and Don Hawkins. They are also responsible for transporting their child to and from the program.

Parents can keep their students on-site as part of Birmingham City School’s After Care Program for a small fee. The program serves students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Families eligible for support from Child Care Resources can get assistance with fees.

An aftercare program is also available at Tuggle Elementary for a small fee, which ends at 6 p.m.
