Trails play important role in Caswell County’s allure
By Hosanna Pennell, Caswell County Year of the Trail Coordinator/ Manager, Piedmont Triad Visitor Center. 2023 is officially the Year of the Trail in North Carolina, with all 100 counties encouraged to celebrate the more than 1500 miles of publicly accessible trails, blueways, greenways, footpaths, and the communities they are in. The initiative, drafted into state law during the 2021 session of the NC General Assembly via HB 554, states in part, “Whereas, trails bring people together, as they not only connect physical locations but also represent the bonds that create communities.”

Caswell County Schools Third and Fourth graders get excited as March approaches. At each elementary school you can find them practicing multiplication fact fluency. One third grade class winner and a fourth grade class winner at each school, competes at the district level in the system wide Math Multiplication Madness event. This year, the Caswell County District Math Multiplication Madness was held on March 1. For months, eight Caswell County students have been diligently working hard, having fun, and making history as the first Odyssey of the Mind team from Caswell County. Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a program that teaches creative problem-solving and celebrates outside the box, divergent thinking. The program emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management and public speaking. Long before there were STEAM classes and clubs, there was Odyssey of the Mind.

Third in a series on the ARTS initiative project underway in Caswell County Schools. The Caswell County Public School System continues the process, via surveys, to collect input from the Caswell community regarding the ARTS in the schools. This data will help the system to understand the level of interest, the need and then determine the best direction for the students, teachers, and community. Once all data is gathered, the school system will submit a grant application with the purpose of incorporating more arts programming into the curriculum. The data gathering continues daily as the project work is being conducted in the community.

Caswell County Sheriff's Department Issues Special Weather Statement
Caswell County, North Carolina Sheriff Department has issued a special weather statement from Blacksburg, Virginia at 6:29am EST on March 07, 2023. "Across the Foothills and Piedmont region of Virginia and North Carolina, relative humidities will reach a minimum of 20 to 30 percent during the afternoon hours. Sustained winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph. These winds, low relative humidity levels, and low fuel moistures will increase the risk of ignition and spread of wildfires this afternoon and evening. Across the North Carolina mountains, northwest winds will be 15 to 30 mph sustained with gusts around 35 mph. The strongest of these winds are expected in the morning hours, not coinciding with the afternoon minimum relative humidities of 30 to 50 percent. Residents in these areas are encouraged to postpone burning and to properly extinguish all smoking materials. Many destructive wildfires each year are started due to improperly discarded smoking materials" (Caswell County, North Carolina Sheriff Department).
