It's official. Mississippi has some of the best food for miles around. Southern Living magazine recently named two Magnolia State restaurants on its list of the most beloved diners in the South. "Diners are magical places. Jackson is known for its diverse cuisine, from classic Southern barbecue to upscale Italian dishes and everything in between. In the past few months, several restaurants have found a home in the Capital City, adding to the growing dining scene. If you're looking for fresh finds going into 2026, following are five recently opened restaurants to try in the new year. Boondocks Where: 904B East Fortification St. Boondocks, the newest member of Jackson's barbecue scene, opened in late November. The restaurant, owned and operated by Kody McCraney, is located in Belhaven's English Village Shopping Center, filling the space that had sat empty since Lou's Full Serve closed in September 2024. McCraney has been serving barbecue through a pop-up location at Green Ghost in Fondren, and the extensive menu has now found a permanent home. This Boondocks location will join two other Mississippi locations in Wiggins and Lucedale.
