West Central Solid Waste is excited to announce customers can now begin recycling a new type of plastic thanks to the installation of new processing equipment at the Carroll County Landfill. According to Solid Waste Director, Mary Wittry, the new machinery, which is capable of removing #5 plastics from the waste stream, was first operational near the end of April, and they used May to resolve any initial problems before opening it to all customers. Wittry explains what qualifies as a #5 plastic.

Previously, the only option for consumers in Carroll, Crawford, Guthrie, and Shelby counties and portions of Calhoun County was to throw these items away with their regular garbage. Wittry says this addition will significantly reduce the trash going into the landfill.

Number five plastics are typically very light but tend to take up a larger volume than items of similar weights, shortening the operational life of a bury pit. Wittry says these containers must be prepped before being tossed in the recycling bin.
