Cardington man dies in Morrow County accident

An 81-year-old Cardington man died in a two-vehicle crash in Morrow County on Wednesday night.

Robert Nichols died in the crash, the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a press release. The crash occurred at approximately 9:21 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. It happened on Township Road 126 just south of Township Road 127.

Nichols was operating a 2002 GMC Envoy southbound on Township Road 126. A 15-year-old male driver was driving a 2021 Case IH tractor pulling an implement northbound on Township Road 126. Nichols traveled left of center and struck the implement, according to the release. He was not wearing his seatbelt when the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. The juvenile driver of the tractor was not injured.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that alcohol and drug use were not suspected factors in the crash. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Gilead Fire Department, Cardington Fire Department, Morrow County EMS and the Morrow County Coroner’s Office assisted investigators at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
