CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - The grand opening for the Jefferson Aquatic Center was on April 6, at 1 p.m.

Leaders from the city and Cape Public Schools held a ribbon cutting at Jefferson Elementary.

The new center features three 25-yard lap lanes and an enclosed slide that goes outside the building before bringing riders back inside.

Cape Girardeau Superintendent Dr. Neal Glass and others tested out the slide during Thursday’s event.

“This is so awesome,” he said. “This has been several years in the making and to see everybody come together for such a monumental accomplishment is just huge.”

The new center will offer swimming lessons and fitness programs. It’s also available for birthday parties.

On August 13, 2021, there was a groundbreaking for the Jefferson Pool Project, which was a topic of discussion amongst city leaders for several years.

The aquatic center is part of a renovation project for the school.

The new center cost approximately $4 million and took more than a year and a half to complete.
