New York truck driver sentenced for traffic crash that killed Louisville-area man

CANTON ‒ A 23-year-old truck driver from Jamaica, New York, has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for causing a traffic crash that killed a Louisville-area man last year.

Canton Municipal Judge Richard J. Kubilus gave Vishavpal Singh credit against his sentence for a day he already spent in the Stark County Jail.

Christopher L. Brogan , 36, died as the result of the crash that occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 62 and California Avenue in Nimishillen Township.

Singh pleaded no contest on Monday to charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter and failing to obey traffic control signal lights. Kubilus found him guilty, sentenced him and ordered him to pay $839 in fines and court costs.

Brogan was driving a 1994 Honda Civic north on California Avenue on the morning of Nov. 24 when his vehicle was struck by the 2022 Freightliner Cascadia commercial semi-tractor driven by Singh. The truck had been traveling east on Route 62 and was towing an enclosed trailer, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report.

After the collision, Brogan's Honda Civic then traveled into the Route 62 median and hit a traffic sign before coming to rest on Route 62 westbound.

Elise N. Hamilton, senior trial counsel for the Canton City Prosecutor's Office, said vehicular homicide cases are difficult to prosecute and difficult to handle.

"In this one specifically, there's a lot of family members who are involved," she said. "It's a loss for anyone."
