Man arrested for kidnapping, assault at Canandaigua home

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A man was arrested in Canandaigua last Thursday for kidnapping and assault, according to the Canandaigua Police Department.

Police say 31-year-old Michael Phillips held a woman over 65-years-old inside a Canandaigua home and seriously injured her for three days. According to police, Phillips is related to the victim, who was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“It was headed in a negative direction, and we can only speculate how that would have ended up. If it kept going for an extended period of time, who knows the kind of abuse that the victim may have been subjected to as well as the amount of injuries,” said Canandaigua Police Chief Matthew Nielsen.

Police say the victim was able to eventually escape and flee to a neighbor’s home. After Phillips was arrested, police add he refused to provide fingerprints or photos to the Canandaigua Police Department.

Phillips faces charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, and obstructing governmental administration. He was arraigned and taken to Ontario County Jail without bail and is scheduled to return to court Monday.
